Wickersley Youth Tournament 2023

On Saturday 1st July and Sunday 2nd July, Wickersley School and Sports College hosted the Wickersley Youth Tournament 2023.

This year’s tournament was a huge success with around 5000 people in attendance over the weekend, and thanks to Wickersley Youth JFC’s fantastic team of volunteers and staff as well as the local Wickersley Community, the event was enjoyed thoroughly by all in attendance.

Club Secretary Joe Trozzo who helped oversee and organise the event said “The aim is obviously to showcase football, the community and the facilities at Wickersley school itself. Without the school, as a club we don’t have our own facilities, so we’re very proud to be able to use the facilities that the trust provides.”

This year, 168 teams entered the tournament including teams from Blackburn, Harrogate, Nuneaton, Nottingham, Leeds, Hull, as well as teams from the local areas, making it one of their largest tournaments to date.

Over the course of the 2-day event, 452 games were played totaling to 92.1 hours of football played, and a whopping 897 goals were scored with 448 clean sheets given out.

The club awarded 15 Team Trophies, supplied by local business and club sponsor, Burroughs Motor Company Group, with winners from all the different age groups that entered the event ranging from Under 7’s – Under 14’s  Girls and Boys teams.

The tournament even had some special visitors over the weekend. John Heeley, the Shadow Secretary of State for Defence from the Labour Party, and Alexander Stafford, the Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party for Policy were both in attendance and were amazed at the number of people who came to the event commenting on how well it all looked and what a great facility Wickersley School was.

Adam Cloney, Wickersley Partnership Trust Lettings Manager said that “It was a privilege to host Wickersley Youth again for this year’s iteration of the competition. It is exactly what the Trust is aiming for in terms of community usage and demonstrates that the school is at the heart of the community. Thanks to all the club’s volunteers who helped make the event a success.”
