On Saturday 22nd March, Wickersley hosted the Rotherham Netball Finals Day. We had 5 teams qualify for the day from Year 7-11. Impressively, all 5 year groups won their semi-finals quite comfortably, and succeeded to the final. The Y7’s faced Wath, and whilst it was a very close game going end to end for the first half, Wath started to get turnovers and unfortunately it was too much for Wickersley to claw back. The final result finished 18-9 to Wath, with Wickersley finishing in a very impressive runner-up position.
The Y8’s faced Aston in the semi-final, and again proved their strength and beat them
comfortably to face Wath in the final. Unfortunately, Wath proved too much in the final;
however, last year the Y8 team didn’t qualify for finals day so anything extra was such an
achievement!
The Y9’s faced Wales in their semi-final, and proved too strong for them, comfortably beating them 24-9. Again, Wickersley faced Wath in the final and after a strong start by both teams, Wath started to gain a lead that Wickersley struggled to catch. The Y9’s lost their semi-final last year, so making it to the final was already a huge improvement, well done girls.
The Y10’s faced Wath in the semi-final, and whilst it was a close start with the goals going in easily at both ends of the court, Wickersley dug deep at half time and started to turn ball over quite comfortably. The girls turned it up a gear and ended up winning to progress to the final. In the final, they faced a very strong St Bernards team, however, it was clear from the start that Wickersley had fire in them after losing the final last year by 1 goal. From the starting whistle, Wickersley defended out of their skin to turn ball over and the shooters put on an impressive display to win the game 24-8. A very well deserved victory for an incredibly committed group of girls.
Finally, the Y11’s game was a straight final due to two schools unfortunately dropping out before the event. The final was against Wath, and from the very first whistle, Wickersley’s
talent was unmatched. The level of Netball that was played was phenomenal and Wath
struggled to gain any kind of possession. The final score ended in a triumphant 43-1 to
Wickersley, which was a showcase of their talent and skill. A very successful morning of Netball for all year groups involved, who should be very proud of their commitment to training and efforts this year.
We look forward to seeing what’s achieved next year!
