On 27th March, 36 of Wickersley’s Y8 and Y9 students travelled to the battlefields of Belgium and France to visit the site of the First World War. The group stayed in Ypres, and visited a number of British and German war cemeteries and memorials for those missing, including the largest British and Commonwealth War Cemetery at Tyne Cot. They then travelled to the Somme region of France, and visited the largest memorial in the world, Thiepval.
Students learnt how the war was fought in the trenches, and heard some stories of the soldiers who were involved. They also visited the old medieval city of Bruges and enjoyed a trip on the canal. The visit culminated in the Menin Gate ceremony on the last night, where students Florence, Zak, Tom, and Sofia laid a wreath on behalf of Wickersley, being the only school to do so on that evening. Y9 student, Erin, was also picked to read the exhortation. The students had a wonderful time and learnt a lot from visiting the places they have studied.
They were an absolute credit to the school, and should be extremely proud of themselves!
