Film Studies

The Subject Way

Our subject has a ‘Subject Way’ at the heart of it. Our Subject Way is designed to help students become young subject specialists. The Subject Way has two main purposes:

Firstly, to teach students the vital skills they need to achieve their full potential and gain the very best grades they can. Secondly, to teach students how each subject relates to the wider world, incorporating the life skills they will learn.

It is our belief that knowing how what you learn links to the wider world brings a subject to life and therefore improves overall understanding and engagement.

Component 2: Global Film (40%)  Students are introduced to the film Submarine which they learn to analyse in terms of aesthetics and film style. Component 2: Global Film (40%) Students study Slumdog Millionaire to explore the concept of narrative in film. Component 2: Global Film (40%) Students study a non-English language film, Tsotsi. They explore representation in the text across a range of factors such as age and gender.

Component 2: Revision

Students will revise all the content from Component 2. 

Component 1: Film and Film technology timeline.

 

Students to revise their knowledge of the key developments in film and film technology timeline.

Component 3: Production (20%)

 

Students develop their understanding of the horror genre by analysing a sequence from Psycho and another horror film of their choice. They begin pre-production and filming of their own horror film sequence.

Component 3: Production (20%)

After completing filming for their horror film sequence, students edit the footage to create the final product in post-production. 

 

An evaluation of the filmmaking process is also completed.

Component 1: Key Developments in US Film (40%)

Students complete a comparative study of two Hollywood science-fiction films – Invasion of the Bodysnatchers and ET. They compare the films in terms of narrative, representation and aesthetics.

Students complete a comparative study of two Hollywood science-fiction films – Invasion of the Bodysnatchers and ET. They compare the films in terms of narrative, representation and aesthetics. The work is assessed for mock examination.

Students analyse the independent film, The Hurt Locker, and compare their view on the film with those from a piece of specialist film writing.
