Saturday 5th April played host to the annual Rotherham Schools Netball Finals Day, Wickersley qualified in all six age categories which is a fantastic achievement in itself.

The semi final rounds were a great display of Netball, and as always the standard of Netball is showing great promise. The Wickersley teams are going from strength to strength each year. Five out of our six teams won their semi final rounds and made it through to the final. The year 10 missed out on a place by only one goal losing to Swinton in the semi final which was unfortunate as it was a physical match which went goal for goal throughout and in honesty could have swung either way.

In the final matches, Wickersley really showed dominance and the culmination of all the hard training they have put in throughout the year started to pay off. The 6th form final was a complete whitewash beating Wath 25-7. Wickersley showed great discipline on court, timing moves down the court well and rarely missing a shot. A special mention to Chloe O Sonya, Eve Cobbett and Jenny Massingham who have won their first finals day since year they started Wickersley in year 7.

Year 11 showed great depth in the final against Wath, they were able to play their own game, play through a physical match and win their third finals day in a row by beating Wath 21-8. Year 9 had a slow start against Aston in the final, again another physical match where they eventually settled down to win the game 20-13. Year 8 played a nail biting final where they went down by 4 goals in the first quarter, they had a lot of work to do throughout the game and pulled it back to within one goal but there wasn’t enough time to clinch a few more, the final score Wickersley 7, Winterhill 8. The year 7 squad have had a great season this year, new players to the game, they have listened well, worked hard on tactics and positioning and have really clicked to produce an outstanding performance in the final to beat Wath 28-3.

Well done to all the girls involved, great commitment to training and matches which has proved to pay off at the end of the season. Looking forward to next season already.
