On Tuesday 13 Y8 girls attended the annual Rotherham Npower Football League Girls Cup. The tournament was 6-a-side at Aurora Sports Ground in Brinsworth. The girls split into two teams and played 5 league games each competing against Rotherham schools such as Swinton, Thrybergh, Wingfield and Rawmarsh. One team in particular stormed the league games and advanced to the semi-final whereas the other team were unfortunately knocked out of the competition. The remaining team performed fantastically in the semi-final winning 4-0 with 3 goals being scored by Georgia Sulej, 2 of which from a corner which she curled into the net and one from Milly Morritt. It was a competitive final, however Wickersley’s constant attacking approach resulted in a mighty strike from Lauren Winter winning the game 1-0.
The girls are to be presented with their trophy pitch side at an upcoming Rotherham game at New York Stadium. The next round of the competition will be played in January at Nottingham Forrest’s Training Ground. If the girls are successful in this round they will advance to the overall final which will be played at Wembley Stadium.
Well done to all involved, you did yourselves and the school very proud.
