Saturday 20th April eventually saw the Rotherham Netball Finals being played after the original date had been postponed before half term due to the freak spring snow bout. As always the event brought lots of anticipation with 5 teams from 6 in the running to reach the final. As always we aim high and as a result came out with another good years results.
The conditions couldn’t be more different to the original date with the sun beaming down on the courts and everyone smiling and looking forward to playing in the sun. The atmosphere was fantastic with a great show of support and encouragement from parents and spectators.
Year 8 were in pursuit to retain their title at the top and cruised easily through to the final beating Aston in the semi. The girls faced Swinton in the final where they cruised to a 21-8 victory. Some fantastic demonstrations of their training and learning throughout the season put into practice. The team have played so well all season with wins all round however the attacking force and shooting combo of Mille Morritt and Izzy English were particularly impressive. Year 9 played really well in the semi final against Wath however injury to one of our players caused Wath to capitalise and eventually win the game making it through to the final. Year 10 were also out to assert their dominance and retain their title from Swinton. A particularly difficult match which has been repeated in the previous 3 years, last year won by Wickersley and Swinton the two years before that. The girls were pumped up and ready to play hard to win. They put their heart into the games, chasing down every ball, marking players out of the game and forcing errors. Particularly impressive play by Lucy Winch at GD who collected numerous interceptions and made it very difficult for Swinton’s best player to dominate the game however as we approached the final quarter we showed that our hard work throughout the season has paid off as we were fitter and kept the pressure on when it mattered and pulled away with the game finishing 15 – 12 to Wickersley. Year 11 were out to challenge for the title, in their mission to get to the final they had to overcome Oakwood in the semi who normally give them a challenging game however we were on fire with fantastic shooting from Chloe O’Sonya and Jenny Massingham, great defensive play down the court and Eve Cobbett making a real difference in the defence to turnover interceptions and deliver the ball back down to our shooting end to convincingly beat Oakwood to reach the final. Tougher opposition was to follow however in the form of height which made a real difference in the final against Wales. The girls played with great determination and fight until the final whistle however the game finished Wales 16, Wickersley 5, that said the score did not reflect the game! 6th form were out to prove they are the best in Rotherham, they were determined to retain their title and play hard. The girls were really impressive in the semi final, Miss Collins said “that is the best I have ever seen them play” the girls fought hard, paced themselves and cruised through to the final with a convincing win over Aston. Lauren Myers played fantastically well controlling play from the centre and bringing the ball down the court. Amelia Sweeney picked up any sneaky and loose balls in the defensive third converting the turnovers and Sophie Wood created movement and play in the attacking circle finishing with accurate shots to win the semi. The girls faced Wath in the final and were suddenly back to the same place and time as last year, hoping for the same result. The final was a toughly fought and contested game with great play and errors by both teams, at the end of each quarter it was tight with one goal in it. As Wickersley went into the last quarter they were down by two goals however with Jodie Hill making a crucial interception in the dying seconds of the game she managed to deliver the ball up court where our shooters converted to win the game 13-12.
Overall Wickersley again have proved we are the best in Rotherham with 3 wins and a runner up in the whole tournament. This is more than any other school in Rotherham. Fantastic result girls!!!!!!
